Today I had a Zoom visit with the illustrator for The Power of the Yin Oracle Deck, D. Yael Bernhard. There are only thirteen more illustrations to complete for the deck!
These meetings are always wide-ranging and creative. We go into an intuitive and practical space at the same time.
Together, we discuss the composition of the illustration, the color, the style (sensual, "cubist and conceptual," primal, abstract, etc), and of course how the illustration is interpreting the text I have written. We consider how each illustration fits in to the sweep of the deck as a whole. It is also our priority to portray women of many colors, shapes and ages. And indeed, the colors of the figures in this deck are wide-ranging, multi-layered and nuanced. They are intended to prompt users of the deck to go into the imaginal and energetic realms, beyond race, culture and defined identities.
